What do people get from reading posts in online journals?

Are they snoopy people?  Bored people? 

I don't understand the logic in online journals.  Diaries used to be books with tiny locks on them, hidden beneath mattresses to keep little brothers from finding intimate and private thoughts.

I got tired of my journal and deleted it, but now I'm thinking about giving it a go again.
